Franklin E. Rutledge, Commander
Our mission is to empower and support local veterans, their families, and communities by providing services and fostering a strong sense of community. We are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for veterans through housing assistance, benefits navigation, emergency relief, and meaningful fellowship, ensuring that no veteran or their family feels alone in their journey.
In 2005 Commander Franklin Rutledge, after serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom, created this organization as a center of hope. Inspired by the struggles he witnessed among veterans returning home—many unaware of their benefits and left to navigate their tragic and traumatic experiences alone—Commander Rutledge dedicated himself to creating a supportive community for veterans. Today, our organization has grown to over 100 members, providing essential services and fostering a sense of fellowship to ensure no veteran faces their challenges alone.
Our relationship with local VA offices allows us to offer personalized assistance to our members in filing for and accessing their benefits. We have successfully helped many veterans determine their eligibility for back pay and other available benefits.
LCVG has secured temporary housing units for veterans facing housing insecurity. These fully furnished short-term units come with pantries stocked with nonperishable food items, offering a stable and supportive environment during their transition.
While this service relies on volunteer availability and was reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, we were fortunate to offer free transportation for veterans to VA appointments in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Florence.
We take the loss of a fallen soldier very seriously. When a member passes away, we offer unwavering love and support to the soldier's family through meaningful actions such as funeral service support, flag dedication, and meal donations.
Food justice is a vital aspect of community justice. We collect donations from local businesses and collaborate with food distribution services to ensure the Georgetown community has access to nutritious food from fruits and vegetables to nonperishables and fresh meat.
Our hope is to improve access to better living in underserved communities. Thanks to our generous donors, gently used (and sometimes brand new) clothes, shoes, furniture, and supplies are available to those in need in our local community.
Over the years, we have cultivated a close-knit family within the Low Country Veterans Group. Members connect with like-minded individuals who share similar experiences. From cookouts to community events, we deeply value fellowship and connection.
